As parents, we strive to give our children the best start in life, and that includes laying the foundation for good oral health. At Seaham Smiles, we understand the importance of dental care from the earliest stages of childhood through adolescence. In this guide, we’ll provide you with advice on how to care for your child’s teeth at every age, ensuring they maintain a healthy and beautiful smile for years to come.
Infancy (0-2 years):
The journey to healthy teeth begins even before your child’s first tooth emerges. Start by gently wiping your baby’s gums with a clean, damp cloth after feedings to remove bacteria and prevent the buildup of plaque.
Once the first tooth appears, usually around six months of age, it’s time to introduce brushing. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush specifically designed for infants and a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste, about the size of a grain of rice.
Early Childhood (2-6 years):
As your child’s teeth continue to emerge, establish a consistent brushing routine, brushing their teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Encourage them to spit out the toothpaste rather than swallowing it.
Limit sugary snacks and drinks, as they can contribute to tooth decay. Opt for healthier alternatives like fruits, vegetables, and cheese.
Schedule your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or as soon as their first tooth appears. Early dental visits help familiarise your child with the dental environment and allow the dentist to monitor their oral health development.
Middle Childhood (6-12 years):
By this age, your child should be capable of brushing their teeth independently, but supervision is still important to ensure they’re doing a thorough job. Consider using disclosing tablets occasionally to highlight areas where plaque remains after brushing.
Encourage your child to wear a mouthguard during sports activities to protect their teeth from injury.
Continue regular dental checkups every six months to monitor your child’s oral health and address any issues early on.
Adolescence (12+ years):
As your child enters their teenage years, they may become more independent with their oral hygiene habits. Reinforce the importance of brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups.
Discuss the potential risks of smoking, vaping, and other unhealthy habits on oral health, including tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer.
Consider orthodontic evaluation if necessary to address any issues with tooth alignment or bite.
By following these guidelines and establishing good oral hygiene habits early on, you can help ensure your child enjoys a lifetime of healthy smiles.
At Seaham Smiles, we’re here to support you every step of the way on your child’s dental journey.
